Her father is Imran Mirza and her mother in Nasima Mirza.She started playing lawn tennis when she was six years old.She started playing at the Nizam Club in Hyderabad and C G Krishna was her coach. Krishna is Mahesh Bhupathi’s father.She later joined the Sinnet Tennis Academy in Secunderabad, after which she joined the Ace Tennis Academy in USA.
Her first appearance in the international arena was when she represented India at the World Junior Championship in 1999 held at Jakarta, Indonesia.
Sania created history when she reached the third round of Australian Open 2005. She became the first Indian to achieve the feat. Sania Mirza has received the prestigious Arjuna award by the Indian government for the year 2004.
She is known as a teenage sensation who has achieved success at a young age.

In an interview in Kolkata, Mahesh Bhupathi felt that Sania had yet to play her best. He felt she was still on a rising curve and would reach her peak in 2-3 years. Globosport is Mahesh Bhupathi’s company, felt that Sania would be among the top 10 – 15 of the WTA rankings. He felt that she had untapped potential.
