Johannesburg [South Africa], Sept 16 : Manchester United fell to a second successive defeat with a 1-0 loss to Feyenoord in the Europa League Group A opener at the De Kuip stadium, Netherlands.
Tonny Vilhena fired the decisive goal in the 79th minute as a much-changed United line-up failed to put up a spirited performance, Sport24 reported.
United had earlier suffered a painful loss to bitter rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday.
Jose Mourinho's side will now aim to reverse the upset when they will play Feyenoord in the return leg at Watford on Sunday.
Having passionately contested in the top-tier competitions for more than a decade, competing in the Europa League for the first time in 13 years was an unappetising prospect for Mourinho.
United looked completely lacklustre and were unconvincing for long periods, while the Dutch opponents capitalised on an uninspiring performance by the Old Trafford club as the unmarked Vilhena swept home from just inside the penalty area.
