Goa Oppn stages walkout over CAA issue

Panaji, Feb 3 : The Opposition on Monday staged a walkout of the state Assembly after Speaker Rajesh Patnekar allowed a motion moved by ruling MLAs to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for passing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the Parliament.

"Since you are insisting on going ahead with the congratulatory motion, we are walking out," Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat said, before he and several members of the opposition parties staged a walkout.

Earlier on Monday, Patnekar was forced to adjourn the proceedings of the first day of the budget session for nearly two hours, after the opposition created a ruckus over the same issue.

As soon as BJP MLA Atanasio Monserrate stood to move the congratulatory motion, Opposition MLA Vijai Sardesai of the Goa Forward party said that the CAA does not "fit any law" and said that it was unfair on part of the Speaker to allow the congratulatory motion, even as 10 Opposition MLAs have jointly demanded in writing, a discussion on the issue of the CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).

"As much as this law in unconstitutional, what you are doing is also unconstitutional.

This is de-citizenisation," Sardesai said, even as

the Speaker allowed moving of the congratulatory motion by the BJP MLA.

The Opposition MLAs also stormed the well house shouting slogans and heckling the Speaker, forcing the latter to adjourn the House.
