Seoul, Sep 28 : Cancer remained the top cause of death in South Korea, with the number of fatalities hitting a record high last year, a government report revealed on Tuesday.
In 2020, 304,948 deaths were reported in South Korea, up 3.3 per cent from a year earlier.
It marked the highest annual number since Statistics Korea began compiling such data in 1983, Yonhap News Agency reported.
The statistics agency said 593.9 deaths were reported per 100,000 South Koreans last year.

The 10 leading causes of death included cerebrovascular disease, suicide, diabetes and Alzheimer's disease.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people in their 40s and 50s.
A total of 13,195 people took their own lives in 2020, down 4.4 per cent from 2019.
