Congress asks four of its candidates to withdraw their nominations

Lucknow, (Uttar Pradesh) [India] Feb. 13 : The Congress Party on Monday asked four of its candidates from Lucknow Central, Mankapur, Suratganj and Payagpur to withdraw their nominations.

Reacting on this sudden decision by the Congress, party leader Maruf Khan, who was contesting the Uttar Pradesh assembly election from Lucknow Central, said he had led a strong campaign and he would continue to contest the election.

"Party leaders Raj Babbar, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, they themselves asked me whether I would win the elections to which I assured them that I will definitely win.

I have put all my efforts in the polls and people of my constituency were with me. I had faith that we were winning but if at this point such type of decision is made then I along with my supporters will contest the elections," Khan told ANI.

He added that with the party's chief members' consent he had filed his nomination. Polling in Lucknow central will take place on February 19. Total 67 constituencies will go to the polls on February 15..
