Rio de Janeiro, Aug.8 :India's hopes of clinching their first Rio Olympics medal in archery were shattered after the women's recurve team crashed out of the tournament with a 4-5 defeat against Russia in their nail-biting quarter-final clash here on Sunday.
After losing the first set 48-55, the Indian trio of Deepika Kumari, Laxmirani Majhi and Bombayla Devi rebounded strongly to win the next two sets before they eventually ended up losing the tie breaker at the hands of Russian team comprising T.
Dashidorzhieva, K. Perova, and I. Stepanova. Deepika needed 10 points to beat the Russian archer's total score of 25, but she barely had any time left and could only shoot an 8 in the final set to propel his side post a total score of 23.
Earlier, the team had faced tough opposition from Colombia in the 1/8 elimination round of the women's recurve archery event, but they eventually came out on top to set up last eight clash with Russia.
However, the three Indian players will also play the individual recurve event which will be held on August 9.
