SAFRON ministry, Nadra sign MOU on carrot-and -stick-policy for illegal Afghans

Lahore [Pakistan], May 12 : The Ministry of States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON) and the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) agreed to begin documentation of illegal Afghan nationals which is considered as a 'carrot- and- stick -policy for illegal Afghan nationals.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Federal Minister of SAFRON Lt. Gen. (retired) Abdul Qadir Baloch and Chairman Nadra Usman Mobeen asking illegal Afghan refugees to get them registered.

There are approximately 1 million Afghan nationals living without documentation in Afghanistan "There is an offer for the Afghan nationals in the deal.

This is a carrot and stick approach. If Afghan nationals get themselves registered, they will not be harassed by police," The Dawn quoted Abdul Qadir Khan as saying.

The legislation the government would give six months to the Afghan refugees for registration. Pakistani authorities committed abuses against Afghan refugees that triggered mass refugee return of about 200,000 in 2016.

The consequences of the National Action Plan for Afghan refugees included a wave of police abuse, such as the unlawful use of force , arbitrary arrests and detentions.

Baloch said Afghan government has been taken on board before the process of documentation of the illegal AFghan national in Pakistan.

"This is why Afghan government will provide us with an official for each centre to verify the illegal immigrants, Dawn Quoted Baloh as saying.
