Long distance runner Vishwakarma’s A sample tests positive

New Delhi, March 16 : Uttar Pradesh's long distance runner Sunil Vishwakarma's bid of making it to this year's Tokyo Olympic Games seems to be crumbling after he tested positive for banned substance, said a national level coach.

The 'A' sample of the 23-year-old athlete has tested positive for Erythropoietin (EPO), a performance enhancing drug banned by the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA).

A NADA team had collected 10 urine samples during the eighth National Race Walking Championship held last month in Ranchi.

Of these, one athlete has failed the dope test.

This is Vishwakarma's first offence. His 'B' sample, however, is yet to be tested.

Athletes could face a four-year ban for the first doping offence if proven guilty during NADA's anti-doping disciplinary panel hearing.

Each sample taken is kept in two separate bottles - 'A' and 'B'. If the A sample turns positive, athletes have the right to have their 'B' samples tested.

The samples were tested at Belgium's WADA accredited lab. Since Vishwakarma's 'A' sample is positive, he has provisionally been suspended from competing in all national or international events.

Vishwakarma finished first in 20km race in men's Group B consisting of 18 athletes. He clocked 1 hour 28 minutes 09 seconds, which was far off the Tokyo Olympic qualification time of 1 hour 21 minutes.

In men's Group A, Haryana's Sandeep Kumar and Rahul Kumar had qualified for the Tokyo Olympics while in the women's Group A 20km race, Priyanka Goswami from UP was successful in earning an Olympics quota.

According to Ashok Ahuja, sports medicine expert, EPO is commonly used by endurance athletes to improve performance.

"It is a blood booster. It increases the presence of red blood cells in the body that aid the oxygen carrying capacity of an individual and props up performance in distance events," Ahuja told IANS.

Ahuja said that this banned drug is also used to treat patients having chronic kidney disease.

"It is easily available over the counter, without a doctor's prescription. One vial would cost between Rs 2,000 and Rs 2,500," he said.

During the Indian Grand Prix series and national race walking competition held in February NADA had collected as many as 40 samples.

Till date two athletes have failed dope tests. Besides Vishwakarma, a top 400 metres female athlete has also tested positive for banned drugs. But their names have not been official disclosed.

India women look to play for pride in final ODI vs SA

Lucknow, March 16 : India women will face South Africa in the inconsequential fifth and final ODI here at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

With the Proteas women sealing the series after winning the fourth ODI on Sunday and taking an unassailable 3-1 lead, the final game will be played by India for pride.

The Proteas batters have managed to chase challenging targets in the last two matches and have made the Indian bowling attack look pretty ordinary.

Leg-spinner Poonam Yadav pointed out India's weakness in spin bowling.

"We beat South Africa in South Africa and also when they came here, we beat them here. But our spin attack hasn't been that successful now. In practice sessions we talk about how to improve our bowling especially on wickets that don't assist us," Yadav said while speaking to the media ahead of the fifth ODI.

Yadav added that the Indian team is trying to sort out issues during practice sessions.

"We need to bowl in partnerships. We need to control runs from one end, then only we get wickets from the other end. You need to contain to get wickets. These wickets help batting so we need to contain," added Yadav.

South Africa have banked on Lizelle Lee's batting. Opener Lee has scored 288 runs in four matches with one century and two half-centuries. She has hit 38 boundaries. Laura Woolvardt has also hit two half-centuries in four games.

While seasoned pace bowler Jhulan Goswami has been brilliant, taking eight wickets in three matches and conceding runs at just 3.44 an over, the South Africa women have ensured runs against the other Indian bowlers.

Pace bowler Shabnim Ismail has been the pick of the visiting bowlers. However, the rest of the South Africans haven't been able to do much.

Yadav is hopeful the team will be able to put up a better performance in the T20 Internationals.

"In T20Is, we will try to do better.

Maybe we weren't able to implement our plans in ODIs. But we are working on it and will improve in the matches ahead," she said.

Have to be more focussed with new ball: England’s Rashid

Ahmedabad, March 13 : England leg-spinner Adil Rashid wasn't sure if he would get the new ball although the team management had given him a hint by asking him to practice at the nets bowling to Jason Roy.

Rashid bowled the first over and the third over of the match and picked the wicket of India skipper Virat Kohli in his initial spell.

"This is something new for myself. I have been working [on it] for the past couple of days. There were just talks around it, maybe with their opening batters, [I was told] that I might bowl with the new ball.

So [they said] you might just practice with it in case you are required to do it," Rashid told the media on Saturday.

Rashid picked the prized wicket of Kohli who was caught at the edge of the inner circle.

"You have to be more focussed [bowling with new ball] because you have got only two fielders out and the batsmen come a lot more harder at you.

There are a lot more scoring options," said Rashid and added that he is willing to bowl any time his captain Eoin Morgan would want him to.

Rashid talked about the stint he had with opening batsman Roy at the nets with the new ball.

He said it helped both players.

"It was a good practice for both of us, him batting up and I bowling with new ball setting the field and we both communicating and helping each other.

For myself, it was bowling with new ball and him getting experience. It was good."

Rashid said that it was always great to dismiss the best batsman in the opposition side like Kohli.

He had dismissed Kohli in an ODI in England a couple of years ago as well.

"It is always nice to get a world class player out; always nice to come in get him a couple of times.

Some days they get hold of you, hit fours and sixes. Some days you get them out early. That is how the game works. It is just part and parcel of the game. Obviously, nice to get world class players."

Rashid though didn't want to write India off from the series and the World T20 despite the crushing loss they suffered on Friday.

"With T20, it is a funny game.

Any team can win on the day. It all depends on the day, how bowlers come off and how batters come off. India is a strong side. We will stick to our strengths, keep developing. Then we are in with a chance to win T20 World Cup."

To grab this opportunity, we need to develop world-class stadiums, sports clubs, infrastructure regarding sports and also develop Delhi as world-class city to get the attention of the Olympics committee."
