Punjab CM lays foundation stone of sports varsity in Patiala

Patiala, Oct 25 : Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday laid the foundation stone of the state's first dedicated sports university along with various developmental projects in his hometown Patiala.

The projects, launched virtually at two separate events, include surface water-based water supply project for Patiala city (Rs 503 crore), development of a heritage street near Qila Mubarak (Rs 43 crore), new bus stand (Rs 65 crore) and widening of the roads (Rs 6.74 crore).

The Chief Minister also handed over keys to few selected beneficiaries of the EWS housing scheme at Haji Majra.

Of the 174 flats constructed there, 124 have been allotted.

The Chief Minister extended Dussehra greetings to the people of Patiala and urged them to take all precautions amid projections of a second coronavirus spike in November-December.

The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Sports University will be constructed at a cost of Rs 500 crore, of which Rs 60 crore will be invested in the initial phase for the development of academic and administrative blocks and hostels.

The Chief Minister recalled the contribution of his grandfather Maharaja Bhupinder Singh, in whose memory the university has been named, and whose 129th birth anniversary falls on Sunday, coinciding with Dussehra.

The university, will help in scientific development of sportspersons, Amarinder Singh said, adding he wanted to see Punjab develop as a sports hub and its sportsmen and coaches equipped with scientific knowledge.

He thanked the panchayat and people of Sidhuwal, who had given land free of cost for the sports university.

They had earlier donated land for the law university and have now also offered another piece of land for any other developmental project, said the Chief Minister, announcing a grant of Rs 50 lakh for Sidhuwal, which has developed itself as a model village.

Amarinder Singh expressed the hope that staff and students will be able to move into the upcoming campus by 2022.

They will benefit immensely from the university's multiple courses, many of which are based on those from UK's Loughborough University, whose Vice Chancellor Lord Sebastian's video message was telecast at the foundation stone-laying event.

He assured that despite Covid-19 problems, his government would provide more funds to the university for the speedy completion of its works.

World-class Delhi sports varsity soon in Mundka

New Delhi, Oct 17 : Almost a year after passing a Bill, the Delhi government on Saturday expedited its work to set up a "world-class" Delhi Sports University (DSU) which will offer graduate, post-graduate and doctorate degrees in cricket, football, and hockey among other sports.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday inspected the proposed site in west Delhi's Mundka and said that DSU will make India proud in the world of sports.

Sisodia said that it is the dream and vision of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to provide world-class facilities and training to our youth for advancing in the field of sports.

"If we do this, then our sports talents will leave no stone unturned to bring in more medals in international sporting events like Olympics."

Mundka's AAP MLA Dharampal Lakra and Sisodia discussed the details of the project with officials.

The Delhi Government passed the Delhi Sports University Bill in December last year in the Delhi Assembly.

Sisodia said that the work for the university had been disrupted due to the ongoing Covid pandemic.

"But now we want to pick up the pace of work as it is our dream to provide world-class opportunities to our children and youth in the field of education and sports."

The Deputy CM said that it is the Delhi government's endeavour to ensure that the level of training and facilities at DSU will be cutting-edge and so advanced that the best sports talents can come to train in Delhi.

"Once this dream comes true, no world power will stop India from bringing in record-breaking gold medals in international sports competitions and events," he said.

Sisodia said that the objective of DSU is to promote world-class training, research and academics in the field of sports as well as health and exercise.

"It is our aim to provide multidisciplinary teaching and training in sports to ensure sports professionals are better prepared for a wide range of employment opportunities.

This university will also promote public health through sports in academia and make it more accessible to the public."

As virtual fans cheer in IPL, cops launch pan-India crackdown on betting

New Delhi, Oct 7 : The roar you hear after every boundary hit or wicket taken in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) is virtual, compensating for the crowd that has not been allowed into the stadiums as a precautionary measure due to the pandemic.

However, there are many who literally shout, cheer and get the adrenaline rush on every ball of the ongoing T20 cricket matches.

They have money at stake and are running a dark network of betting on IPL matches with their setup of laptops, mobiles and registers to maintain records.

The Indian police in states like Hyderabad, Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata, Goa, Delhi and the NCR has actively launched a crackdown on betting syndicates, arresting several men who were caught red-handed from small flats to resorts in India.

The Goa police busted at least two gambling networks in Goa betting on the outcome of IPL matches.

On October 2, the Goa Police Crime Branch raided a hotel and arrested three persons from Hyderabad who were found accepting bets on IPL matches from people across India.

The arrests came a day after the police apprehended five persons from a villa at Candolim, a coastal village in north Goa.

All those arrested were from Rajasthan except one who was from Nepal. None of those arrested belonged to Goa.

In Hyderabad, at least 13 persons were arrested from different parts of the city and more than Rs 22 lakh in cash was seized.

Seven members of a gang organising betting for the ongoing IPL matches were apprehended by the Cyberabad Special Operations Team of Balanagar zone on Sunday night.

In another incident a gaming house in Red Hills was raided and the police apprehended three persons while three more were held by Hyderabad city police for betting on IPL matches.

In Uttar Pradesh, at least eight men, including five in Meerut and three in Varanasi, have been arrested for their alleged involvement in betting in the ongoing IPL matches.

The Kolkata police acting on a tip-off, conducted raids in Hare Street, Park Street, Jadavpur and Salt Lake areas on Thursday night and arrested nine persons, mostly in their mid-20s, for allegedly betting on the previous day's IPL cricket match.

In the NCR, Gurugram police have arrested two persons on charges of betting on an IPL match between RCB and Delhi Capitals.

The duo was arrested from an EWS flat in Vatika City in Sector-50.

"Based on specific inputs, the police raided the spot and nabbed the duo when they were placing bets on an IPL match played between RCB and Delhi Capitals," said Subhash Boken, Spokesperson of the Gurugram police.

The police registered a case under the Prevention of Gambling Act.

In a big crackdown in Delhi, six persons were arrested from south Delhi, four from south-east and two from west Delhi's Punjabi Bagh a few days ago.

"In Rajpur Khurd village, six persons were found sitting on a lawn with a laptop in which entries on bets were maintained.

In one mobile phone, a live cricket match was being telecast and on another landline phone the rates of bets were being announced," said Atul Thakur, DCP, south Delhi.

Betting on IPL matches is not new and the police has to deploy both technical surveillance and manual intelligence to unearth these betting rackets that are mushrooming all over the country.

Footballer takes AIFF to court, hearing fixed for Oct 20

New Delhi, Oct 1 : Budding footballer Anwar Ali (20), who has represented the country at various international tournaments and was an integral part of India's campaign in the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017, has approached the Delhi High Court challenging the decision of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to prohibit him from practicing with his club as he suffers from a rare heart condition.

The court has now fixed the matter for further hearing on October 20, after the AIFF said that Ali can appear before its medical committee and produce experts' opinion and videos on his medical condition and the meeting shall be convened in the next 10 days.

Anwar Ali through his counsel told a single judge bench of the high court comprising Justice Navin Chawla that he came from a poor background and football was his only livelihood.

Ali has been diagnosed with a rare heart condition known as apical hypercardio myopathy (HCM).

Advocates Amitabh Tewari and Abhinayu Tewari, while appearing for the 20-year-old defender, submitted that their client is a highly rated footballer who has represented the country internationally at the U-15, U-17 and U-19 levels, and played every minute in India's campaign at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

"We have challenged a September 7 direction by the AIFF to Kolkata's Mohammedan Sporting Club to not allow Ali to train with the team, thereby violating his fundamental right to earn his livelihood and practice his profession due to the diagnosis of a congenital heart condition called apcial hypercardio myopathy (HCM)," Ali's legal team said.

Appearing for the AIFF, advocate Premtosh Mishra said that Ali is a fantastic player but the AIFF is in a difficult situation as if the boy is allowed to play, it may a pose a big risk to his life.

Mishra also informed the court that Ali has been examined by various doctors and after going through the opinions of the medical experts, a prima facie view has been taken not to allow him to play, but it is not a final decision as further inquiry is on.

The plea has challenged the AIFF letter and the proceedings pending before the committee, contending that it has been done in a bid to take away the right to earn his livelihood in a complete opaque, whimsical and arbitrary manner without following any rules, regulations or due procedure.

Ali's counsels also requested the court to allow their client to rejoin the team so that he can play if the decision comes in his favour.

Got my limb amputated, but never accepted defeat, Paralympic champ Jhajharia tells Modi

Jaipur, Sep 24 : : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday spoke to Paralympic champion Devendra Jhajharia from Rajasthan's Churu district via video conferencing under the Fit india campaign in which he discussed his struggle, hard work and success story.

During this conversation with PM Modi, Jhajharia said he believes that one should never accept defeat in life and strive for success.

"When I was nine-year-old, a high-tension wire passing through a tree gave me an electric shock when I was climbing on it.

I had to get my left hand amputated right from the elbow. Since then, going out of the house was a challenge for me.

"In such a situation, my mother Jivni Devi gave me a new lease of life. She motivated me to go out and play. If she wanted, she could have asked me to study. Had my mother not taken me out of the house that day, I might not have been able to win two gold medals in the Paralympics," added Jhajharia.

Jhajharia further added that he even thought of taking retirement when he had injury in his shoulder.

"Then I thought of fighting my challenges; with a firm belief in myself, I exercised. Even today, I spend an hour exercising owing to my hand injury," he said.

Jhajharia is the only Indian to win gold medal twice in Paralympics

The special thing is that Jhajharia has won the second gold in the Paralympic Games by smashing his own world record.

He is the only differently-abled fitness influencer to be present in this nationwide event.

This Paralympic javelin thrower has been conferred the Khel Ratna.

Cricketing legend Kevin Pietersen bats for rhino conservation

New Delhi, Sep 22 (IANSlife) Former England cricket captain and a part of the commentary panel for the ongoing IPL 2020, Kevin Pietersen, says that in the midst of a global pandemic, people are starting to realise that we need to start protecting nature.

On World Rhino Day, Pietersen is featuring in 'Save This Rhino - India', a National Geographic documentary that exhibits his passion for rhino conservation.

"We need to start protecting what's important to us.

We need to start looking after the planet, and hopefully the last six months have been reality check for all of us to take stock of what we got, what we need to and to try to not hammer the planet as much as we've been hammering the planet.

If we get rid of this planet, we've nowhere to go," Pietersen told IANSlife over phone from Dubai.

A cricketer who's had a hall of fame career in all formats of the game, Pietersen's passion for rhino conservation took shape in 2013 when he went to a safari in South Africa.

"I started to understand the dynamics around the poaching crisis and how rhinos are being killed every single day and if we didn't do anything, by 2025, we'd lose an entire species.

At that stage, I thought I might as well use my profile for good. I love wild animals and the outdoors. So, I started to bang the drum about raising awareness and raising money and speaking to people, trying to get donations and stop poaching.

It has been going on for seven years and I loved every single bit of it as much as I hate some of the situations and images I've seen and I've been into.

I think we are starting to see some real benefit from the work so many great people are doing," he shared.

Rhinos are under extreme threat worldwide and it is mainly due to illegal poaching to source rhino horns.

His dream project SORAI - Save our Rhino in Africa India - is an initiative for the ongoing preservation and protection of Rhino in Africa and India and the ongoing education, awareness and public support of this issue globally.

The mission is to save rhino from extinction.

The documentary 'Save The Rhino: India' premiers on September 22 on Nat Geo Wild and features explorer Krithi Karanth.

They walk in one of India's incredible forests - Kaziranga National Park - to assess the situation of rhinos in India.

The documentary explores how poaching and flooding are threats to the species prized for its horn.

"We spent some time with people in villages around, schools and the Park itself looking at the stunning wildlife and scenic beauty.

India is going to be so proud of the story that we tell because of how successful the conservation work is out there and how perfect they have the situation compared to many other countries around the world.

They got the poaching under control and the animals are flourishing," the cricketing legend and conservation enthusiast shared.

He adds that since the river Brahmaputra floods its banks every year, they are working to launch a technology around early warning flood systems which helps with the human-wildlife conflict, and will help people and rangers help the animals out.

"Evacuating before the flood is going to save a lot of lives."

Asked how the pandemic has affected cricket, he shared: "Pandemic has affected absolutely everything, all sports - but it's nice to see all sports are back on.

Golf was the first sport to be back on, football is playing, cricket is playing. IPL is just started here in Dubai. It's wonderful."

Pietersen also shares a bit about his life and time in lockdown. "I was lucky, I live on a big piece of land on the countryside of the UK, I was with my family, two young children, and we had the best time.

The weather was amazing in the UK. We came really close as a family. Not travelling as much as I used to travel was something we benefitted from. Trained hard, became more healthy and just had the best time."
