Kerala ex-cricketer’s son held for his murder

"Ashwin was drunk when the crime occurred on Saturday.

While he has admitted to his crime, he says he does not remember other details as he was drunk. We are looking into the involvement of others and have questioned a few suspects," said Biju and added that Ashwin would be presented in the court later in the day.

There was an altercation between the father and son while consuming liquor.

The police suspect that Thampi must have been injured when pushed by his son Ashwin.

A housemaid told police that there were frequent quarrels between the two.

The Kerala Police had on Tuesday registered a case of unnatural death in connection with the demise of Thampi after the post-mortem report.

"We are probing if the injury was caused due to a fall or otherwise.

The body was found yesterday (Monday) at his house near here. His son was also in the house but he says when he came to check his father was sleeping and he had left," Biju had said on Tuesday.

Thampi, 64, was found dead on Monday morning after his tenants complained of foul smell emanating from the ground floor where he lived.

Thampi retired from the State Bank of Travancore and was appointed on contract basis with the Audit Department of the State Bank of India.

Two years back, his wife had died and he remained upset over the personal loss.

A flamboyant player, Thampi played for Kerala Ranji team between 1979 and 1982 and occasionally kept wickets too.

Lives, health priority over National Games: Goa Sports Minister

Panaji, May 29 : Lives and health of people takes top priority over the National Games, Goa's Sports Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said on Friday, while reassuring that while the 36th National Games had to be postponed on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, they would eventually be held after the health crisis subsides.

"National Games will eventually be held in Goa, but it had to be delayed because of this pandemic.

We are not in a position to take any risk. Taking care of lives and health should be the first priority, the Games can follow," Ajgaonkar told reporters in Panaji.

"The Games will take place because we have created infrastructure for it.

But we cannot say for certain as to when the Games will be organised. Nothing can be said until a vaccine (for Covid-19) is invented or a solution is found to the crisis," Ajgaonkar said.

The Indian Olympic Association as well as the Goa government on Thursday, had announced the indefinite postponement of the National Games, which were due to begin on October 20 on account of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Goa unwilling to host National Games due to Covid-19: CM

Panaji, May 28 : Goa is not willing to host the National Games this year on account of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant here on Thursday.

Sawant said the Games, scheduled to begin on October 20, would have to be postponed indefinitely and the state government would communicate it to the Union Sports Ministry to convey to the Indian Olympic Association (IOC) about Goa's unwillingness to host the event.

"We are 100 per cent ready to host the National Games.

We are proud to be hosts of the event, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic we have to postpone it," Sawant said.

"Although Goa is a green zone, participants from all over the country will be taking part in the event," he said.

When asked if the Goa government would recommend an alternative date, Sawant said, "We can't decide on a date right now as the Covid-19 situation is fluid."

Failure to complete the requisite infrastructure in Goa has been one of the reasons behind the delay in the Games from November 2016 to October 2020.

The last edition was held in Jharkhand in 2011.

Due to the delay, the IOC had even threatened to move the event to another state.

Different perceptions of boundaries lead to face-offs at LAC: Army chief

New Delhi, May 14 : Indian Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said on Thursday that temporary face-offs do occur along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China due to the differing perceptions of the alignment of boundaries.

Naravane issued a statement following incidents of skirmishes along the LAC with China, in which he said, "Temporary and short duration face-offs between border guarding troops do occur along the LAC due to the differing perceptions of the alignment of boundaries which are not resolved."

He said that there were two incidents at Eastern Ladakh and North Sikkim where aggressive behaviour by both sides resulted in minor injuries to troops after which both sides disengaged after dialogue and interaction at the local level.

"It is reiterated that both these incidents are neither co-related, nor do they have any connection with other global or local activities," Naravane said.

The Indian Army chief also said that all such incidents are managed by established mechanisms wherein local formations from both sides resolve issues mutually.

He pointed that there are established protocols and strategic guidelines which have been given by the Prime Minister after the Wuhan and Mallaparam summits.

Indian border troops have always been upholding peace and tranquility along the border areas he said.

"I can say with confidence that development of infrastructure capabilities along our Northern borders is on track," Naravane said.

He also stressed that the Indian Army's posture will not suffer due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Our Border Road Organisation (BRO) continues to work tirelessly even during the Covid-19 pandemic to connect far flung areas so that our civil brethren living in those locations are connected and facilitate faster development to the region," Naravane said.

Indian and Chinese soldiers were involved in scuffles on two occasions in the last one week along the LAC in Sikkim and Ladakh.

Four Indian soldiers and half-a-dozen of their Chinese counterparts were injured during the confrontation.

In Sikkim, the scuffle took place at the Naku La sector, ahead of Muguthang, a pass at a height of more than 5,000 metres.

In total, 150 soldiers were present when the confrontation took place. Later, it was resolved at the local level.

Troops resolve such issues mutually as per the established protocols.

The scuffle in Ladakh took place on the night of May 5 and was resolved by the next morning.

One batch of Pak players stranded in SL return home, others to follow

New Delhi, April 28 : The Pakistan sportspersons stuck in Sri Lanka due to the lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak have been provided travel assistance and while half of the players had returned home on Tuesday morning, the second half is expected to be back soon.

Speaking to IANS, sources in the know of developments said that the players were in touch with the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo and travel arrangements were made so that they can be back to the country safely.

"The players were directly in contact with the Pakistan HC in Colombo.

Some have returned to Karachi this morning by a special flight, while the rest will be returning in the second batch," the source said.

With the Pakistan Cricket Board doing away with departmental teams in domestic cricket, players have been forced to look at opportunities outside the country and that saw the players travel to Sri Lanka in the first place.

The sudden lockdown across the globe in an order to fight the pandemic also saw former New Zealand coach and current RCB director of cricket Mike Hesson stuck in India before he finally reached New Zealand on Tuesday.

Hesson confirmed the same on social media. "What a wonderful sight after spending over a day on a bus to get to Mumbai airport. The staff on Air New Zealand were simply outstanding on our return to New Zealand," he tweeted along with a picture of Air New Zealand aircraft.

The 45-year-old expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi, New Zealand High Commission in India, ministry of foreign affairs of New Zealand and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

The RCB director of cricket had been in Bengaluru and was gearing up for the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League before the pandemic struck and also forced the postponement of the 13th edition of the IPL.

Chandigarh, April 6 : As a goodwill gesture, former ITBP Commandant and Everest climber Mohinder Singh, 76, has contributed Rs 5 lakh from his pension to Punjab Chief Ministers Coronavirus Relief Fund.

He said it is the duty of every responsible citizen to contribute to the fund to fight the deadly virus.

"We can save each and every life and get our country back to normal," he said in a statement.

Singh, who led the expedition to scale the Everest through the toughest North-Col route in 1996, thanked all the frontline soldiers, doctors, police personnel, administration and workers who are working tirelessly to control the situation by risking their lives.

Native of Ludhiana city, he has done extensive trekking in Indian Himalayas and also scaled Alps.

An interesting fact about his Mt Everest expedition was that it was completed under the stint of three Prime Ministers.

It was flagged off by Narasimha Rao on March 22, 1996.

When the team captured it, they talked to Atal Bihari Vajpayee. And when they came back, then Deve Gowda was the Prime Minister.
