D/N Test: Hasina, Mamata to attend; Shah unlikely

Kolkata, Nov 22 : Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate India's first Day-Night Test by ringing the Eden Bell just before the start of play as a sellout crowd at the Eden Gardens will witness history unfold in front of their eyes on Friday.

In the second Test of the two-match series, Virat Kohli's men will start as hot favourites against lacklustre Bangladesh.

But with the pink ball, which both nations are new to, that excitement of how it will behave especially during the twilight period will keep everybody on their toes.

That aside, the carnival-like atmosphere will also give the entire 'event' on Day 1 a unique feel not too familiar with five-day cricket.

The historic match was supposed to kickstart with Army paratroopers flying into Eden to hand over a pink ball each to the two captains just before the toss.

But due to security reasons, that had to be cancelled at the last moment by the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is also highly unlikely to be present as per the final program list sent by the CAB.

Nonetheless, the host association has pulled out all the stops to ensure that the landmark game is made to look extra special.

During the Lunch break there will be a chat show involving the Fab Five -- Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, VVS Laxman and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly.

The other former cricketers who have confirmed their presence include S Ramesh, Saba Karim, Sunil Joshi, Ajit Agarkar, Venkatesh Prasad, Kapil Dev, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammed Azharuddin, Kris Srikkanth, Farokh Engineer and Chandu Borde.

Athletes from other sports will include Abhinav Bindra, P Gopichand, P.V.

Sindhu, Sania Mirza and Mary Kom, but chess legends Viswanathan Anand and Magnus Carlsen will not be able to turn up.

Naimur Rahman, Mohammed Mahmudul Hasan, Maharab Hossain, Mohammed Hasibul Hussain, Shahriar Hossain Biddut, Kazi Habibul Bashar and Mohammed Akram Khan are the former Bangaldesh cricketers who have confirmed their presence.

Former Bangladesh skipper Aminul Islam, who scored his country's maiden century in Test cricket when they played India in Dhaka in 2000, will not be present at the Eden Gardens on Friday when the CAB felicitates the Bangladesh team which took on Ganguly's men in their maiden Test.

The Tea break will feature an instrumental by Sorendu and Group while the former captains will be taken out on carts making a round of the ground along the boundary lines.

The grand felicitation will happen after the day's play with a performance by Runa Laila, and a cultural programme by music composer Jeet Ganguly.

Meanwhile, it has been learnt that Hasina won't be given personal security.

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji will also be in attendance to add glitz to the marquee show.

The eastern Indian city is firmly in the grip of a pink fever and tickets for the first four days have already sold out, as per the BCCI President.

City landmarks are being illuminated in pink to mark the occasion and a ball-shaped pink blimp hovers over the 67,000-capacity stadium.

Anushka describes Engineer’s ‘cups of tea’ charge as ‘ill intended lies’

Mumbai / New Delhi, Oct 31 : Bollywood actress and Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli's wife, Anushka Sharma, posted a long tweet on Thursday, reacting to claims by India cricket legend Farokh Engineer that all that the BCCI Selectors did during the World Cup in England earlier this year was fetch "cups of tea" for her.

"The latest version of these ill intended lies is that I was being served tea by selectors at matches during the World Cup! I came to one game during the World Cup and sat in the family box and not the selectors box as reported but when has the truth mattered when it's about convenience!" wrote @AnushkaSharma on Twitter.

She also said her name should not be used by anyone to criticise the selection committee.

"If you want to have a comment on the selection committee and their qualifications please do so as it's your opinion but don't drag my name into it to substantiate your claim or sensationalise your opinion.

I refuse to allow anyone from using my name in such conversations," Anushka wrote.

Being captain Kohli's wife, Anushka is often seen accompanying him on tours and also spotted at stadiums during matches.

She has been trolled heavily whenever India or Kohli flop on the field.

In Thursday's tweet, Anushka also denied ever bothering the Board for tickets and security.

"My name was used for false stories to make it look like the board was being bothered for my tickets or security, etc when in reality I bought my own tickets for matches and flights and I still kept quiet.

"I was asked to stand in a group photo by the High Commissioner's wife despite my hesitation to be in it, and a huge issue was created over this blaming me for intentionally wanting to be part of it and the said event, even though I was invited for it.

An official clarification was issued by the board on the same and I still kept quiet," Anushka wrote.

Controversy erupted after former India wicketkeeper Engineer came down heavily on the senior national selection committee, saying all that the selectors were doing during the World Cup in England earlier this year was getting Anushka Sharma "cups of tea", according to a report in the Times Of India.

The 81-year-old Engineer also said that Kohli had a "major impact" on the selection process and even went on to call the MSK Prasad-led selection panel a "Mickey Mouse selection committee".

Engineer, who played 46 Tests for India, even questioned the qualification of the selectors for the job.

"We have got a Mickey Mouse selection committee.

Virat Kohli has a major impact (in the process) which is very good. But how are the selectors qualified? Between them, have they played about 10-12 Test matches," Engineer was quoted as saying by The Times Of India.

"I didn't even know one of the selectors during the World Cup and I asked him who the hell he was, because he was wearing the India blazer and he said he was one of the selectors.

All they were doing was getting Anushka Sharma (Kohli's wife) cups of tea," Engineer added.

He felt that former India batsman Dilip Vengsarkar should be in the selection committee for the betterment of the game in India.

"I feel people with the stature of Dilip Vengsarkar should be in the selection committee," he said.

Engineer also welcomed the appointment of former India captain Sourav Ganguly as the new BCCI President.

"It is about time we had a cricketer who ran the board, because the CoA, in my opinion, were a complete waste of time.

He (Sourav Ganguly) was a dashing player, a captain who took bold decisions and I hope he does the same thing as board President," Engineer said.

The current Indian selection committee is headed by M.S.K.

Prasad (6 Tests, 17 ODIs) with former India cricketers Devang Gandhi (4 Tests, 3 ODIs), Sarandeep Singh (3 Tests, 5 ODIs), Jatin Paranjpe (4 ODIs) and Gagan Khoda (2 ODIs) as the other four members.

Delhi Police told to step up security of Kohli (and) Co. after terror threat

New Delhi, Oct 29 : Delhi Police have been asked to beef up the security of the Indian cricket team who are scheduled to face Bangladesh in a T20 international at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the national capital on November 3 after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) received an anonymous letter which claimed that Team India, particularly captain Virat Kohli, were on a threat list, sources said here on Tuesday.

As per Delhi Police sources, the letter contains a list which also includes the names of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Home Minister Amit Shah, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart Lal Krishna Advani, BJP working President J.P.

Nadda and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat.

The NIA has subsequently forwarded the letter to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The anonymous letter says that All India Lashkar, based out of Kozhikode, Kerala, might target Kohli and prominent politicians, said a source.

The sources further said that the letter could be a hoax, but given the heightened threat perception, no chance is being taken and security reviews of the match venue and individual players are being carried out.

India are scheduled to play three T20Is against Bangladesh, the first of which will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday.

The three-match series will be followed by two Tests.

Minor chess player’s father complains to CCI against AICF

Chennai, Oct 27 : The father of a 11-year old school boy Karthick Rahul, who was emotionally abused at a chess tourney recognised by All India Chess Federation (AICF) and its affiliated units, has approached the Competition Commission of India (CCI) for justice.

The CCI last year had ordered AICF to remove its restrictive condition prohibiting chess players from playing in independent tournaments organised by independent organisers.

On October 19, Rahul a minor was evicted from The Hindu Tamil Nadu State Level Chess Tournament Tirunelveli Under-13 midway by the Secretary of Tirunelveli District Chess Development Association (TDCDA) in Tamil Nadu for playing in tournament that was not affiliated to district/state associations/AICF.

The one-day state level chess tournament for under-10/13/15 boys and girls was organised at Sadakathullah Appa College in Pallayamkottai in Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu under the aegis of the TDCDA.

In his complaint to CCI, Rahul's father K.

Murugesh Babu said he had paid the tournament entry fee at the venue and his minor son was paired against an opponent in the first round pairing list.

"I left the venue as soon as the first round started because I had work in my office.

What happened after I left is very distressing," Babu told CCI.

According to Babu, when his son was in a winning position against his first round opponent, the TDCDA Secretary B.

Paulkumar told Rahul that he cannot continue playing in THE HINDU tournament unless he gives an apology letter for having played in tournaments not affiliated to AICF/TNSCA/TDCDA.

Babu told CCI, his son's pleadings to allow him to continue playing fell on deaf ears as he can sign the letter only on the permission from his parents.

"What was the most irresponsible act of the Secretary of TDCDA is that they did not even call me on phone to tell that my son has been removed from further rounds so that I can come over to take him back home," Babu told CCI attaching the pairing sheets.

"It was when Karthick was seen outside the tournament hall when second round was going on that some other participant's parents asked Karthick why he is not playing.

He narrated what happened and they called my number and informed me about Karthick's removal from the tournament.

Only then I came to know what happened," Babu told CCI in his complaint.

Babu requested CCI to make the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association/AICF/TDCDA answerable.

Babu told IANS that he is yet to receive any communication from AICF President P.

R. Venkatrama Raja to his mail.

On July 12, 2018, the CCI held that the undertaking prescribed by the AICF for players regarding non-participation in events not authorised by it amounted to restraints that were in the nature of exclusive distribution and refusal to deal as defined in Section 3(f) and 3(4)d) of the Competition Act 2002.

The CCI said the non-compliance of such undertaking will result in banning of players and removal of their Elo rating, create entry barriers, foreclose competition and restrict opportunities available to players.

Speaking to IANS earlier, global chess body FIDE's Vice-President and Grand Master Nigel Short had said if players were banned for playing and several state federations were de-recognised by the AICF, then warning bells toll about something being amiss.

Sisodia opens astro turf for hockey at Delhi school

New Delhi, Oct 24 : Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia here on Thursday inaugurated astro turf synthetic field for hockey at a government school in Vivek Vihar.

This is the third such ground in the city government school.

"The astro turfs set up at these schools offer a world-class experience to players that too free of cost," an official statement said.

Talking about the need for providing adequate sports facilities to students in schools and to help them hone skills as sportspersons, Sisodia said East Delhi children earlier attended private training due to the lack of options.

"We have tried to address this issue, and today we have a number of sports facilities in different schools of East Delhi," he said.

Sisodia, also the Education Minister, said youth not only needed to practice as a sportsperson but also think as a sportsperson.

"The mindset needs to change", he said.

"Sports is not only about winning championships, but also a way of living.

You either think as a winner or a loser. I want the younger generation to adopt the winning spirit of a true sportsperson. Only then they will be able to overcome hurdles," he said.
