Six Gujarat players qualify for Tokyo Olympics, Paralympics

Gandhinagar, July 3 : In a remarkable feat, six female players from Gujarat have qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics.

Ahmedabad's Maana Patel has qualified for the Olympics where she will be representing India in the 100 meters backstroke event.

Maana is the first female and the third to qualify for the Olympics.

The Tokyo Olympics commences from July 23.

Maana, 21, has had over 180 medals in her kitty, including 25 international, 72 national and 82 state level achievements.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani congratulated Maana on her qualifying for the games on his Twitter handle on Friday.

"Heartiest congratulations to Maana Patel on her qualifying through Universality Quota for #Tokyo2020.

Backstroke swimmer Maana Patel has become the first female and the third Indian swimmer to qualify for #Tokyo2020.

Besides, Ankita Raina has qualified for Tennis and Elavenil Valarivan for Shooting.

The other three females representing India have qualified for the Paralympics -- Gandhinagar's Parul Parmar for badminton, Bhavina Patel for para table tennis and Sonal Patel for para Tennis.

It was 60 years ago that someone from Gujarat represented the country in the Rome Olympics in 1960.

Govindrao Sawant played for the hockey team from India. Before that, Shankarrao Thorat represented India in wrestling in the 1936 Olympics.

Andhra CM meets Tokyo Olympics bound state sportspersons

Amaravati, June 30 : Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on Wednesday met Tokyo Olympics bound state athletes and conveyed his best wishes to them, including announcing cash incentives.

Reddy met international badminton stars P.V.

Sindhu, R. Satwiksairaj and women's hockey player Rajani Etimarpu's parents as she is currently undergoing training at Bengaluru.

The Chief Minister handed over cash incentive of Rs five lakh to each of the three sportspersons.

He also gave a copy of the government order allocating 2 acre of land to Sindhu to set up a badminton academy in port city Visakhapatnam.

Tourism, Culture and Youth Advancement Minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao, Principal Secretary Ram Gopal and others attended the event.

Ajay Jadeja fined Rs 5K for dumping garbage in Goa village

Panaji, June 28 : Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja, who owns a bungalow in the picturesque Aldona village in North Goa, has been fined Rs 5,000 for dumping garbage in the neighbouring village of Nachinola, the sarpanch of the village, Trupti Bandodkar, said on Monday.

Bandodkar said the popular cricketer of the '90s paid the fine without any fuss.

"We are plagued by the garbage issue in our village.

Garbage from outside is also dumped in the village, so we appointed some youth to collect the garbage bags and scan them for any proof to identify the culprits," the sarpanch said.

"We found a bill in the name of Ajay Jadeja in some bags of garbage.

When we informed him not to dump the garbage in the village in future, he said he was willing to pay the fine.

So he paid it. We are proud that such a celebrity, a popular cricket player, stays in our village, but such people should follow the garbage norms," Bandodkar said.

The village of Aldona is home to several celebrities, including Jadeja and writer Amitav Ghosh, among others.

TN announces Rs 3 cr for athletes who win gold in Tokyo Olympics

Chennai, June 27 : Tamil Nadu chief minister, M.K. Stalin has announced a cash prize of Rs 3 crore for those athletes who wins gold in the Tokyo Olympics which is starting from July 23.

The chief minister made the announcement at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Saturday while addressing athletes and sportspersons at a special Covid vaccination camp held for them.

The silver medal winners will be provided Rs 2 crore as cash prize and the bronze medal winners Rs 1 crore, he said.



Nethra Kumanan, Varun Thakkar and K.C. Ganapathy (sailing), G. Sathian and A. Sharath Kamal (table tennis), C.A. Bhavani Devi (fencing) and Paralympian T. Mariappan have qualified for the Olympics from Tamil Nadu.

Stalin reminiscenced his days as a sportsperson in his younger days and said that sports is a major connector and said that iconic athletes like Sachin Tendulkar, Karnam Malleswari, M.S.

Dhoni, P.T. Usha and Milkha Singh will always be an inspiration to the generations of youngsters of the nation.

The Tamil Nadu chief minister said that the DMK in its election manifesto had promised that an Olympic Academy will be established in four zones of the state and added that the promise made in the election manifesto would be fulfilled.

He said that a world-class gym and a state of the art facility to scientifically aid sportspersons will be set up immediately and that his government was committed to promote and support sports and sportspersons.

Stalin said, "If a Dhoni hit a sixer or a Ronaldo scores a goal, the audience in the stadium and those watching on television feel it as a personal achievement." He further said, "A sportsperson can inspire a generation and you all should keep that in mind and be assured that the Tamil Nadu government will support you in your welfare and well-being".

The chief minister also said, "Life is a game, it is said, and there are several people in this country who treat politics also as a game but sports should be taken seriously and sportspersons are an inspiration for generations to come and you should keep that in mind always."

Stalin said that fencing star Bhavani Devi who became the first athlete from Tamil Nadu to qualify in the Olympics was already given a cash incentive of Rs 5 lakh and the other five athletes would also be given the cash soon.

He said that as a sports enthusiast he and his government would always stand for the sportspersons of the state in the days to come.

The vaccination camp was organized by the Department of Youth Welfare and Sports, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, Health Development and Tamil Nadu Olympic Association.

Support Olympic-bound athletes like our cricketers: Rijiju

New Delhi, June 26 : Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju said on Saturday that India's Olympic-bound athletes are national heroes and urged the people to extend support to them, the same way they back the country's cricketers.

"I want the Olympics movement and the importance of Olympics to be understood by everyone, spread across the length and breadth of India.

Sports is the biggest soft power of a nation," said Rijiju.

Chief national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand spoke about how the athletes were more confident in their abilities than their compatriots in the past and underlined the role of the government in making this change possible.

"Today I can confidently say that every member of the team is training to be in their best form and possibly win a medal and if they don't have a medal or have good performances, I am sure they are going to be very disappointed," said Gopichand during a virtual interaction organised by CII-Sportscom Industry Confederation in association with the Sports Ministry.

Somaya was confident that both the men's and women's hockey teams would do well at the Olympics.

"We have some of the world's best coaches involved with hockey these days and our boys and girls are in good hands," said Somaya, adding that he was hopeful that India could pose a challenge for a medal in Tokyo.

The session was also attended by 2016 Rio Paralympic silver medallist Deepa Malik and 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist in shooting, Gagan Narang, among others.

Proud moment for AP, says Guv on Malleswari’s new assignment

Amaravati/New Delhi, June 24 : Andhra Pradesh governor Biswa Bhusan Harichandan on Thursday said the appointment of Karnam Malleswari as the vice chancellor of Delhi Sports University is a proud moment for all the people in the state.

"It is a proud moment for the people of Andhra Pradesh that Karnam Malleswari, who hails from Srikakulam district in Andhra Pradesh, has been appointed as the vice chancellor of the first Sports University in the country by the Delhi government," said Harichandan.

Congratulating the new VC, the Governor said Malleswari became a household name in India after she won the bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

"Karnam Malleswari is an inspiration to women in the country, having won 29 International medals including 11 gold medals in the world championships, Asian weightlifting championships etc and has been conferred the Arjuna Award, Padma Shri Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award," he added.

Meanwhile, Malleswari, said her ambition in the new role is to produce Olympic medals for the country.

"The biggest focus will be on achieving Olympic medals.

We have to groom international players," said Malleswari, who won the bronze medal in weightlifting in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

She said the new varsity will offer doctoral courses as well and endeavour to train talented children.

Malleswari said that prospective students with potential in any Olympic sport can apply for admission in the university.

Meanwhile, accolades poured in for the new VC from her home state Andhra Pradesh on the new assignment.

"It is a matter of pride for all of us for the appointment of renowned weightlifting sportswoman and Telugu pride Malleswari as VC of Delhi Sports University," said actor cum politician Pawan Kalyan.

Similarly, Rajya Sabha MP and senior Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader V.

Vijayasai Reddy congratulated Malleswari on Thursday and wished that she becomes an inspiration to many.

Haryana to provide jobs to international medal holders

Chandigarh, June 23 : Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday said the players who will secure medals in international events would be given government jobs.

He was interacting with Olympic medalists on International Olympic Day here.

Haryana Minister of State for Sports Sandeep Singh was also present.

The chief minister said besides getting government jobs in the sports department, international medal winners would be appointed on deputation in the education department and other departments.

Expressing his willingness to promote sports, Khattar said that if sportspersons excelling in their field are appointed as coaches or trainers, the young sportspersons could be greatly benefited.

The state has formulated a policy to promote sports.

Under it, along with three per cent reservation, government services are being provided according to the medals won by the sportspersons.

Apart from this, the state is enhancing sports infrastructure along with renovation of sports stadiums to promote sports.

The Minister of State for Sports said 30 players have been selected for the Tokyo Olympic Games.

A sum of Rs 5 lakh has been provided to each of the players as preparation amount.

He said in the Olympic Games, cash amount of Rs 6 crore will be given for gold medal winners, Rs 4 crore for silver medal winners and Rs 2.50 crore for bronze medal winners.

Sandeep Singh said to mark the International Olympic Day, 11,000 saplings would be planted in the sports complexes which would be beneficial for the environment.

On this occasion, the chief minister planted a sapling at his residence here in the name of martyr Havaldar Shiv Kumar.

Chennai, June 23 : While the Tamil Nadu government has relaxed lockdown rules permitting sports training without spectators in Chennai, Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts of the state, competitive sports activities could take a month to start in Chennai and the adjoining districts.

The Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) conducts tournaments in various age groups and also the interstate league but the competitive sport will take time, according to the organisers.

A senior TNTA office-bearer while speaking to IANS said, "Government has allowed practice without any spectator while maintaining Covid protocol but the players are spread across the state.

It will take time for them to come back to Chennai to participate in training and to increase their fitness level to start playing.

There are several local and inter-state tournaments pending and we expect the competitive sports to commence soon and we are at home even without spectators."

The Chennai Hockey Association is also keen to start training programme but only after a detailed meeting with officials, umpires, players, and club officials.

Viswanathan, former Kerala state hockey player and presently an office bearer of Chennai hockey club told IANS, "We are happy that the training will commence soon but for the game to survive, competition is a must and players have to go through the rigours of competitive sport for them to be equipped mentally.

Our players are also spread out in different parts of the state and it will take a couple of weeks for them to be back in action in the city."

Similarly, Volleyball, Basketball and Table Tennis clubs and office bearers are upbeat on the government decision to commence training of sports in Chennai and adjoining districts.

Muthuvel R., a volleyball player with a club in Chengalpetu and expecting to don the Tamil Nadu colours one day, told IANS, "I am really happy that the government has allowed training of sports.

I will now have to increase my fitness level and start playing in the club. Our club has all the facilities and my aim is to break into the Tamil Nadu junior team and later play for the country.

I don't know whether it is a tall wish, but I am confident that I will make it one day."

Noida shooting range to be named after ‘Shooter Dadi’

Lucknow, June 22 : The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to name the shooting range in Noida after the international shooter Chandro Tomar, popularly known as 'Shooter Dadi'.

Chief minister Yogi Adityanath gave instructions in this regard on Tuesday.

Chandro Tomar died at the age of 89 in April due to Covid.

Shooter Dadi had started professional shooting at the age of 60 and went on to win many national competitions.

She is considered the oldest shooter in the world. Her sister-in-law, Prakashi Tomar, is also a shooter.

In 2019, a film based on her life, 'Saand Ki Aankh' was released.

Chandro Tomar lived with her family in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh.
