Govt announces setting up of five ‘Divyangta Khel Kendras’

New Delhi, June 20 : Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot on Sunday announced setting up of five 'Divyangta Khel Kendras' in different parts of country.

Gehlot said,"Looking at the interest towards the sports among the 'Divyangjan' of the country and their good performances in Paralympics, the ministry has decided to establish five 'Divyangta Khel Kendra' in different parts of country, out of which Ahemdabad will be one such cities to open such facility."

Addressing the 'Samajik Adhikarita Shivir' for distribution of aids and assistive devices to 'Divyangjan' under the ADIP Scheme of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in Gujarat's Jamnagar, the Minister said that the central government had released Rs 8.06 crore fund to Gujarat under scholarship programme benefitting 2,808 beneficiaries.

He said, as many as 709 railway stations, 10,175 bus depots and 683 websites have been covered under Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan.



Gehlot added that work on the National Mental Health Rehabilitation Center in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, has been started by CPWD.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that the society which does not care about Divyangjan is itself a disabled society.



He said that in the year 2016 the Right to Persons with Disability Act was brought in, which not only provided more security, but also ensures and protects the fundamental rights of the person with disabilities across the nation.



The Chief Minister underlined the need for empowerment of Divyangjan and to bring them in the mainstream of society for overall development of the country.

A total of 6,225 aids and assistive devices valued at Rs.3.57 crore will be distributed free of cost to 3,805 Divyangjan at block or panchayat levels.



In view of Covid-19, out of the total 3,805 pre-identified Divyang beneficiaries, aids and assistive devices were provided to approx 50 beneficiaries of Jamnagar city block in the inaugural distribution camp on Sunday.

Punjab CM announces Milkha Singh Chair in Patiala sports varsity

Chandigarh, June 19 : Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday announced a Milkha Singh Chair at the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University in Patiala in memory of the legendary athlete who passed away on Friday night due to Covid complications at the age of 91.

The Chief Minister, who visited the 'Flying Sikh's' residence in Chandigarh to pay his last respects, said the Punjab government will ensure that Milkha Singh's memory continues to inspire the younger generations.

Amarinder Singh, who earlier announced a state funeral for Milkha Singh, besides announcing a state holiday as a mark of respect to the former Olympian, said the legacy of the great Indian sprinter would continue to live on in the hearts of the people.

Milkha Singh's death is a mammoth loss to the entire nation and a sad moment for all, he added.

Recalling the declaration of a national holiday by then Prime Minister late Jawaharlal Nehru after Milkha Singh defeated champion Pakistan sprinter Abdul Khaliq in Lahore in 1960, the Chief Minister said that he wished he could have also declared a national holiday today.

But Punjab would mourn the legend with a state holiday, with flags flying at half mast, he added.

The 1960 win in Lahore was a momentous occasion for Milkha Singh, who had lost his family in Pakistan at the time of Partition.

It was after that victory that then Pakistan President General Ayub Khan had nicknamed Milkha Singh as 'Flying Sikh', said Amarinder Singh while interacting informally with the media outside the athlete's house in Sector 8 here.

Dream Sports Foundation extends aid to Covid-hit sports professionals

New Delhi, June 19 : Over 3,500 sports professionals across 29 sports -- including 3,300 current and retired athletes -- have received financial and equipment support from Dream Sports Foundation (DSF) through its 'Back on Track' initiative to tide over the Covid-19 pandemic.

DSF, the philanthropic arm of Dream Sports, said in a statement on Saturday that it has "successfully supported over 3,500 sports professionals across 29 sports during the pandemic as part of its Back on Track programme.

Out of the 3,500 beneficiaries, 3,300 are current and retired athletes, over 100 are coaches, and more than 70 are sports support staff and journalists.

"The beneficiaries are from 24 states and three union territories in India.

In Delhi, over 100 sports professionals have received significant aid through this initiative," the DSF statement said.

"Launched in August 2020 on National Sports Day, 'Back on Track' has been able to help people in need from the sports industry by providing financial aid, training and sports equipment support, coaching, proper diet and nutrition, monthly stipends and hygiene kits.

To ensure that the aid reached the most affected members of the Indian sports ecosystem, DSF also helped 16 NGOs across the country, including Nav Sahyog Foundation, Dribble Academy, Nagaland Football Foundation, The Right Pitch, The Ball Project and many more."

Bhavit Sheth, the COO and co-founder of Dream Sports (and) Dream11, said, "Owing to the lack of opportunities and resources due to the pandemic, many sports professionals and athletes were giving up on their dreams as they were unable to sustain themselves.

We wanted to help them land on their feet and take strides towards their personal and sporting goals through 'Back on Track'.

"We are glad that we could reach several sports beneficiaries pan-India and provide integral support within the last nine months," said Sheth.

DSF had also donated Rs 15 crore to Give India and ACT Grants for providing medical relief through the supply of medical equipment, hospital beds and aid vaccination drives across India.

Country lost a colossal sportsperson: Modi

New Delhi, June 19 : Condoling the demise of legendary Indian athlete Milkha Singh, 91, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the country has lost a colossal sportsperson.

"In the passing away of Shri Milkha Singh Ji, we have lost a colossal sportsperson, who captured the nation's imagination and had a special place in the hearts of countless Indians.

His inspiring personality endeared himself to millions. Anguished by his passing away," Modi informed in a tweet.

In another tweet, Modi said he had spoken to Milkha Singh just a few days ago.



"Little did I know that it would be our last conversation. Several budding athletes will derive strength from his life journey. My condolences to his family and many admirers all over the world."

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said: "India mourns the sad demise of legendary sprinter Shri Milkha Singh Ji, The Flying Sikh.

He has left an indelible mark on world athletics. Nation will always remember him as one of the brightest stars of Indian sports. My deepest condolences to his family and countless followers."

Milkha Singh, 91, passed away in a local hospital here at 11.30 p.m.

on Friday, said a statement from the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education (and) Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, where he was being treated for Covid-related complications.

Milkha Singh was admitted in the ICU of Covid Hospital of PGIMER on June 3 and was treated for Covid there till June 13 when after putting up a battle with Covid Milkha Singh tested negative.

However, due to post-Covid complications, he was shifted out of Covid Hospital to medical ICU.

But despite best of the efforts by the medical team, Milkha Singh could not be retrieved from his critical condition, said Ashok Kumar, official spokesperson for the PGIMER.

Chandigarh, June 19 : Describing the death of legendary athlete Milkha Singh with post-Covid complications, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said it was the end of an era and India and Punjab "are poorer".

His Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar said that the country has lost a star.

"Upset and saddened to hear of Milkha Singh Ji's demise.

It marks the end of an era and India (and) Punjab are poorer today. My condolences to the bereaved family (and) millions of fans. The legend of the Flying Sikh will reverberate for generations to come. Rest in peace Sir!" Amarinder Singh said in a tweet.

"Milkha Singh has left us but he will always inspire every Indian to shine for the country," Khattar added.

Covid-hit Milkha Singh’s health deteriorates

Chandigarh, June 18 : The health condition of Covid-hit former India sprinter Milkha Singh has deteriorated with fever and de-saturation, the doctors said on Friday.

The legendary athlete is undergoing treatment at the PGI hospital in Chandigarh.

"His condition has deteriorated with oxygen levels stipping," said a doctor of the hospital.

His daughter, Mona Milkha Singh, who is also a doctor, is monitoring his health.

The 91-year-old had contracted the virus last month.

His wife, Nirmal Milkha Singh, had succumbed to the virus on June 13.

Wife of legendary Olympian Milkha Singh succumbs to Covid

Chandigarh, June 13 : Former Indian women volleyball team captain Nirmal Kaur, the wife of legendary Olympian Milkha Singh, died at a Mohali hospital on Sunday due to complications related to Covid-19 infection, doctors said.

She was 85 and is survived by her husband, a son, and three daughters.

"We are deeply saddened to inform you that Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh passed away after a valiant battle against Covid at 4 p.m.

today," a statement from the Milkha Singh family said.

Milkha Singh himself is being treated for Covid-related complications at the PGIMER here.

"Milkha Singh's health is fine and improving, but he is still in the ICU," said a spokesperson for the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on Saturday.

Milkha Singh has been under the observation of a medical team comprising senior doctors of the institute since his hospitalisation on June 3.

"Our heart felt condolences on the sad demise of Mrs Nirmal Milkha Singh after battling with Covid-19," said PGIMER Director Jagat Ram in a statement.

"Widely known for her multiple achievements in the sports arena and her extensive philanthropic works, she will be fondly remembered for her accomplishments on and off the field," he added.

Punjab CM condoles demise of Milkha’s wife

Chandigarh, June 13 : Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Sunday condoled the demise of former Indian women national volleyball team captain Nirmal Milkha Singh (85), the wife of legendary 'Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh, as she passed away at a private hospital in Mohali after a battle against Covid-19.

She is survived by her husband, one son and three daughters.

Her son Jeev Milkha Singh is a renowned golfer.

In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said: "I am saddened to learn about the death of one of the iconic volleyball players who brought several laurels for the country thus making every Punjabi proud."

The remarkable services rendered by Nirmal Milkha Singh as Director of Sports for Women, Punjab, for promotion of sports would be ever remembered by one and all, he said.

Sharing his heartfelt condolences with the bereaved family, relatives and friends, the Chief Minister prayed to the almighty to give courage to bear the huge loss in this hour of grief and grant eternal peace to the departed soul.

K’taka organises vaccination camp for sportspersons

Bengaluru, June 10 : As many as four thousand members of Karnataka's sporting fraternity are lining up for their Covid jabs, on Thursday and Friday, at the Kantheerava stadium here.

The two-day mega vaccination camp that began on Thursday, has been organised specifically for sportspersons, coaches, and technical staff of several disciplines, by the Bengaluru civic body - BBMP.

The vaccination camp has been organised by the department of youth empowerment and sports.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has conducted this camp.

Even as 2,200 sportspersons aged above 18 years have registered with the Karnataka Olympic Association, its president Govind Raju said around 3,500 persons are expected to get themselves vaccinated at the camp, over these two days.

Several sportspersons who got their jab on Thursday, expressed happiness on getting vaccinated.

Arrangements have been made for systematic administration of vaccines to different sports disciplines on different days.

While players and support staff of disciplines such as basketball, fencing, swimming, hockey, tennikoit, badminton, rowing, and netball get their vaccines on Thursday, handball, shooting, football, volleyball, table tennis, athletics and roller skating sportspersons will be vaccinated on Friday.

Moves are afoot to conduct similar vaccination camps in other parts of Karnataka, for the sportspersons representing the state at national and international events.
