Covid positive liver failure Kabaddi player successfully undergoes transplant

Chennai, June 10 : Perhaps in a first of its kind, doctors at the MGM Healthcare, on Thursday said they have successfully performed a live-donor liver transplant on a Covid positive national kabaddi player in coma with liver failure.

The 26-year-old patient, Raghul Gandhi, hailing from Puducherry developed acute liver failure and his condition worsened due to sudden onset of jaundice.

He slipped into a deep coma within two days after being diagnosed with the disease and was shifted to MGM Healthcare.

The situation was complicated as Gandhi also tested positive for Covid-19.

Fortunately, his lung was not affected by coronavirus.

"We took up the challenge to do the emergency liver transplant bearing in mind the complicated nature of the patient's health condition," Thiagarajan Srinivasan, Director, Institute of Liver Diseases, Transplant and HPB surgery said.

Normally a liver transplant is performed on Covid free end stage liver disease patient or 4-5 weeks post Covid recovery with 2 successive negative RTPCR tests.

However, Gandhi's condition was critical and the transplant had to be done within 24 hours.

The other problem the doctors faced was the availability of liver as there was only one liver donation in May in Tamil Nadu.

According to Srinivasan, it was then decided to do a living donor liver transplant in which a part of the donor's liver is transplanted after removal of the diseased liver.

The live donor was Gandhi's brother.

Srinivasan and his team conducted the emergency liver transplant within 12 hours.

A bio-bubble was implemented in place to avoid non-mixture of donor and recipient teams, building of separate Covid-proof transport corridors, ICUs, wards and Operation Theatres throughout the entire hospital stay of 15 days for the patient and the team.

Doctors said Gandhi has recovered well with the new liver and has successfully defeated Covid infection and his condition will be monitored for a few days.

Wrestler murder case: Court sends Sushil to another 4 days of police custody

New Delhi, May 29 : A Delhi court on Saturday sent Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar to four more days of police custody in the murder case of a 23-year-old wrestler.

The Delhi police had sought seven more days of police custody, after Kumar was produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Mayank Goel in the case, after the expiry of his 6-day police custody.

However, the court ordered another four days of police custody.

According to the prosecution, Kumar and other accused took the deceased allegedly to Chhatrasal Stadium and beat him up mercilessly.

The police submitted that eight people have been arrested so far in the case and one licenced pistol was recovered from Kumar.

The police added that Kumar did not cooperate during the 6-day custody period.

The prosecutor argued that Kumar's custody is required to recover more incriminating evidence, unearth the complete conspiracy and trace the accused who are yet to be arrested.

The prosecution alleged that Kumar is the main culprit in the heinous crime, where a young wrestler had died, and added that it was evident in the video clip seized from one of the accused and statement of eyewitness.

Kumar's counsel opposed the police application seeking further police remand in the case.

The counsel also accused the police of leaking selective information to the media to create a prejudice against his client.

"I'm not saying media shouldn't be allowed (to report). I'm saying selective leaks shouldn't be allowed," said the counsel.

Kumar's counsel submitted that the police custody should not be misused or given on mere asking, as not even a single ground has been given for the same.

"no ground for further extension is made out.they are asking for complete 14 days. But they failed to give any reasonable ground," Kumar's counsel argued.

A Delhi court on May 23, sent wrestler and Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, arrested in connection with his alleged involvement in the death of a wrestler at the city's Chhatrasal Stadium, to six days police custody.

According to the police, Kumar and his associates allegedly assaulted fellow wrestler Sagar Dhankar and his two friends Sonu and Amit Kumar at the stadium on May 4 night.

Dhankar succumbed to his injuries later.

The Delhi Police have filed an FIR under Sections 302 (murder), 308 (culpable homicide), 365 (kidnapping), 325 (causing grievous hurt), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

They have also included Sections 269 (negligent act likely to spread infection of disease), 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intention) of IPC and various sections under the Arms Act.

Let Sushil Kumar come: Delhi HC refuses to hear plea against media

New Delhi, May 28 : The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to entertain a plea seeking to restrain the media from sensationalising Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar's trial in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old wrestler.

A bench comprising Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh said Kumar is a "vigilant person" and the court cannot entertain a PIL on his behalf.

Disposing of the plea filed by a law student, the bench said: "Let that man come...We see no reason to entertain litigation on behalf of a vigilant person.

The plea claimed that Kumar's career and reputation was tarnished by the media reporting against him in connection with the Chhatrasal Stadium brawl that led to the death of a wrestler.

According to the plea, the excessive publicity of the suspect in the media before the trial in a court of law, either incriminates a fair trial or results in characterizing the suspect as the one who has certainly committed the crime.

The plea added that this amounts to undue interference with the "administration of justice", and sought proceedings against the media for contempt of court.

A Delhi court on May 23, sent the Olympic medallist to six days police custody.

Wrestler murder case: Sushil Kumar sent to 6 days police custody

New Delhi, May 23 : A Delhi court on Sunday sent wrestler and Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, arrested in connection with his alleged involvement in the death of a 23-year-old old wrestler at the city's Chhatrasal Stadium, to six days police custody.

The police questioned Sushil Kumar inside the court and then sought his custody for 12 days for further interrogation in the matter.

Duty Metropolitan Magistrate Divya Malhotra, however, granted six-day custody of him, along with co-accused Ajay.

Additional Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava, representing Delhi Police, submitted that some CCTV footage, the alleged weapon used for committing the offences and also the mobile phones are yet to be recovered by the police as he sought 12 days custody.

Sushil Kumar was evading arrest and he has been on the run for close to three weeks.

According to the police, he and his associates allegedly assaulted fellow wrestler Sagar Dhankar and his two friends Sonu and Amit Kumar at the stadium on May 4 night.

Dhankar succumbed to his injuries later.

Shrivastava added the accused would have to taken to various states for the purpose of interrogation and 12 days remand was justified against the backdrop of Covid-19 guidelines.

Sushil Kumar's counsel contested this argument and submitted that non-bailable warrants were issued against the accused persons which shows police have already identified all of them.

Police cannot seek Sushil Kumar's custody for the purpose of identification of other persons when his client had already stated he was falsely implicated in the case, he said.

Shrivastava, however, insisted that Kumar's custodial interrogation was required to unearth the conspiracy and the motive for the offence.

The police in the status report challenging Sushil Kumar's anticipatory bail plea cited the autopsy report, which claimed that cause of death to be "cerebral damage due to dande ki pitaayi (beating with wooden staves)".

In the anticipatory bail plea, Sushil Kumar said: "The victims are falsely implicating the applicant because he had asked Sagar to leave his property as the same was being misused by him.

It is also known to everyone associated with the Chhatrasal stadium that the purported victims were trying to defame and fix the Applicant for a long time and are trying to falsely implicate the applicant in the present matter." Kumar's anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the court.

Cricket’s inclusion in 2028 Olympics: ICC bets on Indian subcontinent fans

New Delhi, May 23 : The International Cricket Council (ICC) has cited the Indian subcontinent's enormous cricket reach, 92 per cent of the one billion global cricket audience, in its push for the sport's inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles (LA28).

The ICC has underlined that if LA28 embraced cricket it would "provide the Olympic movement unrivalled opportunity to drive fan engagement" in the Indian subcontinent, a region where cricket followers outnumber those of any other sport.

To further stress cricket's wide reach, it pointed out that the 2019 World Cup, held in England, attracted 545 million fans.

An ICC document prepared on the proposal to inclusion in LA28, a copy of which is available with IANS, has thrown up some more remarkable viewership numbers about the 2019 World Cup: 4.6 billion video views; 3.5 billion minutes watched across Facebook and YouTube; 31 million #CWC10 tweets and; 14 million new followers of cricket.

The ICC has compared these figures with those of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

"Rio 2016 attracted 191 million viewers in India. ICC World Cup 2019 attracted 545 million," it has said.

The ICC's LA28 proposal received a big boost last month when the Indian cricket board agreed to send its men's and women's teams to the 2028 Olympics, if cricket is included.

Greats like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting have backed the ICC proposal.

By way of some more mind boggling facts, the ICC has cited its young cricket audience, compared to the older one that watched the 2016 Olympics.

"Average age of a viewer of Rio 2016 was 53; 32 per cent of viewers of the 2019 50-over World Cup in England were aged between 18-32 years; and, the average age of a cricket fan is 34 years," the ICC pointed out.

It also emphasised that 39 per cent of cricket fans are females.

If included in LA28, cricket development in the US could be accelerated while a, American team could be included as a competing team, the ICC has said.

It also pointed out 87 per cent of fans want to see T20 cricket in the Olympics.

The ICC is confident that cricket's inclusion in the Olympics would attract partners from new markets and bring about financial sustainability to its member countries.

The world governing body said that the win-win cricket-Olympics combination would diversify its member countries' income and reduce their reliance on the ICC for income.

At present, the ICC funds its associate members to develop the sport in their countries.

The ICC conducted a survey amongst its 92 associate member countries, and a large majority of them said that they would receive annual financial support, probably from their governments, if cricket became a permanent Olympic sport.

According to the ICC, the survey result showed that 74 per cent of its members said that they would receive annual financial support - probably from their governments, if cricket were included in LA28, and 89 per cent believed that they would receive annual financial support if cricket became a permanent Olympic sport.

The ICC estimated that (Dollar) 13 million additional total funding could come to associate members if cricket was included in LA28, and that 84 per cent of its members (54 per cent currently) would benefit from non-financial support if cricket were an Olympic sport.

The ICC has 104 members, comprising 12 full and 92 associate members.

It has also said that if the men's and women's T20 competition was included as a medal sport in LA28, it would be hugely rewarding -- financially and in terms of viewership.

The world cricket body emphasised that cricket would offer the Olympics a vibrant platform for growth outside of the traditional Olympic strongholds.

"Cricket can provide the Olympic movement with an unrivalled opportunity to drive fan engagement across the Asian subcontinent (read, mainly India)," says the ICC.

"The Olympics can provide cricket with an unrivalled opportunity to super-charge global growth beyond its traditional heartlands, particularly in the US, Europe, and China."

According to the ICC proposal, the T20 tournament at LA28 would run from July 21-August 6, with the men's and women's competitions spanning nine days each.

Eight teams and 16 matches in each event would be played on turf/hybrid pitches at two venues.

However, cricket faces a tough test to be included in LA28.

Since cricket is presently not part of the Olympic programme, the Los Angeles Local Organising Committee (LOC) will have to propose it as an "additional sport".

This is the only option available for cricket, as there is no vacancy for any sport to be included at the Tokyo 2020 and at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The process for inclusion of sports in LA28 begins in mid-2022.

The International Olympic Committee will take a decision on the LOC's proposals for inclusion of sports in mid-2023.

Cricket is likely to face competition with baseball and softball, which are hugely popular in the US.

On the downside, no suitable cricket venue exists in Los Angeles at present to be included in the proposal, said the ICC.

It, however, pointed out the USA Cricket has plans to build at least one high-quality venue in Los Angeles.

Besides the infrastructure, the ICC would need hectic lobbying and a compelling campaign to push its proposal through.

The last time cricket was played outside its traditional boundaries was at the 1998 Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Kuala Lumpur.

India sent a second string team, led by Ajay Jadeja, as the CWG clashed with cricket's Sahara Cup in Toronto.

The Indian team for CWG, however, comprised stalwarts Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, and VVS Laxman, among others.

Now, a women's T20 competition at the 2022 CWG in Birmingham, England, with eight teams competing, has been confirmed.

At the Olympics, the only time cricket was played was 121 years ago, in 1900, when a motley group of players competed under the banner of England and France.

England won the gold medal and France the silver.
