Rio de Janeiro, Aug 15 : India's agonising wait for an Olympic medal showed no signs of abating on the tenth day of the Rio Games as triple jumper Renjith Maheshwary and Srabani Nanda failed to qualify for the finals in the triple jump and 200m events respectively here on Monday.
30-year-old Renjith, hailing from Kerala, failed to replicate or better his personal best of 17.30m, finishing a disappointing 30th out of total 48 participants at the Olympic Stadium.
He managed a leap of 15.80m in his first attempt before registering 16.13m in his second jump. The final nail in the coffin was hammered when Renjith made a final leap of 15.99m which confirmed his elimination from the prestigious quadrennial event.
In the women's 200m event, Srabani failed to progress through to the semifinals after she finished sixth in her heat with a timing of 23.58s in the first round.
Overall, she was 55th out of 72 sprinters. Meanwhile, Indian wrestlers also kicked off the campaign on a disappointing note as Ravinder Khatri lost the opening bout against Hungary's Viktor Lincz 9-0 through technical superiority in the Greco-Roman category.
He became the second Indian in more than 10 years to qualify for the Greco-Roman wrestling category when he qualified for the Rio Games.
Following the elimination of Khatri, India's hopes now rest on Hardeep Singh (98kg) in the Greco Roman category.
He will begin his campaign on Tuesday..
