Murray bows out of Madrid Open, Djokovic proceeds

Madrid [Spain], May 11 : World No. 1 Andy Murray suffered a shock straight-set defeat to Borna Coric of Croatia to bow out of Madrid Open on Thursday.

Coric defeated Murray 6-3, 6-3 in the third round contest that lasted for more than 85 minutes. The Scot delivered too many errors against a highly concentrated opponent in going down to his sixth defeat of the season.

The World No. 1 has now failed to reach the quarter-finals in any of his last three Masters series events, as well as suffering a shock fourth round exit at the Australian Open to Mischa Zverev in January.

Coric, 59th in the world rankings, had secured his first ATP Tour title in Morocco last month. The 20year-old will face either Grigor Dimitrov or Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, World No. 2 Novak Djokovic progressed through to the quarterfinals after defeating Feliciano Lopez 6-4, 7-5 in a match that lasted for one hour and 33 minutes.

Djokovic will now face Japan's Kei Nishikori---who defeated David Ferrer 6-4, 6-3 in his third round clash---in the last eight contest scheduled for tomorrow.
