Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Aug.19 : Indian race-walker Sandeep Kumar, who competed against 79 other athletes at the ongoing Rio Olympics, ended his campaign in the prestigious quadrennial games by making a 35th-place finish in the men's 50 km race walk here on Friday.
After showing very low pace in the early stages of the race, the 30-year-old produced a spirited comeback to rise swiftly to 37th place after completing 40km.
Subsequently, he climbed further by two places after finishing his 50km in 4:07:55 in the race, which is being held in Pontal.
Sandeep stood at 26:57 behind the gold medal, which went to Matej Toth of Slovakia, clocking 3:40:58. Australia's Jared Tallent won silver with timings of 3:41:16 while Hirroki Arai of Japan finished on third place with 3:41:24 in a tightly contested race.
