Tribal woman stripped, filmed on suspicion of phone ‘theft’, probe ordered

Dumka (Jharkhand), Aug. 8 : A tribal girl has been stripped, thrashed and filmed by a group of students in a women's college in Dumka district after she was accused of stealing a mobile phone.

The incident occured in Santhal Pargana Women's College on August 4. The incident came into view after the video surfaced on social media. Following the incident, the victim's father, a farmer, threatened to commit suicide along with his daughter.

Dumka police superintendent Mayur Patel said, that police officials met the girl on Monday, recorded her statement and filed an FIR against the accused.

"We are proceeding with the inquiry. I assure the guilty students would not be spared," Patel told ANI. Chief Minister Raghubar Das also asked officials to investigate the incident and take strict action against the wrong doers.

Narrating her ordeal, victim said, I had recently bought a second-hand phone for Rs. 500. The girl who had lost hers saw my phone and accused me of being a thief. Then they thrashed me and held a students' council meeting inside the hostel which imposed a penalty of Rs.
