New Delhi [India], Feb. 18 : Prior to International Women's Day on March 8, a 'Women Safety Week', from February 19-24, is being organized by NGO SLAP (Street Level Awareness Program) and Priceless Possessions in Delhi and Agra, where men are taking a lead to raise a voice for gender equality (and) women safety.
A group of trainers from France are being flown in to train women safety (and) street survival. Mriganka Dadwal, Founder SLAP, said, "On one hand, more women are breaking the patriarchal ceiling and stepping out and on the other hand, there has been a rampant rise in crime against women.
According to NCRB data, every 20 minutes, a crime is committed against women in India," and added, "Delhi is one of the unsafest cities for women.
To top it up, there is total lack of conditioning when it comes to handling aggression on the street - both physically (and) psychologically." She also said that SLAP workshops are a power packed program aimed to share practical safety tips, use of pepper sprays against multiple attackers and lethal self defense moves to escape an assault.
Poonam Kumar, CEO, Priceless Possessions said, "The main objective of the training is to make women mentally alert and physically strong and reach out to as many sections of women as possible.
The other important objective of our initiative is to involve Men to raise a concern for women safety (and) equality.
Let men take a stand and bring about a change for women and create an unbiased and equal society for them.
As our tagline says - Men of Substance never go out of Fashion." Mriganka stated that an online slogan contest was started a week ago to generate awareness about the issue and said, "This is followed by a weeklong activities in Delhi (and) Agra including Women Safety Workshop for National Association of Deaf, Awareness and Training Session at Dyal Singh College which will also have activities like a Fashion Walk by Young Men raising their concern and standing for the cause, a street art contest on 'Nari Shakti' with participation from both boys and girls, followed by a safety talk (and) demonstration of lethal moves at Filme Fashion, a multi designer store and workshop at Sheroes Hangout in Agra.".
